Coromandel Peninsula

Katikati is at the gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula. Spend a leisurely day driving around the peninsula.

First head north from Katikati to the little gold mining town of Waihi. Visit the Waihi Gold Mining Museum and Art Gallery and learn about 100 years of gold mining in the area.

Then continue on to the beach resort of Whangamata and then on up to Hot Water Beach. Here you can stand in natural hot water springs at the edge of the sea on the beach. Then head to the pristine white sand beach of Hahei and wander along the 40 minute walking track to the famous Cathedral Cove with its magnificent natural rock arch and beach.

After a swim in the crystal clear waters of Cathedral Coves head back to the car park and drive to Whitianga, which is a yachting centre, and has lots of little shops, cafes and restaurants. Whitianga is an ideal place to stop for lunch. From there head towards the quaint little town of Coromandel on the western side of the peninsula.

After leaving Coromandel you head south through Paeroa famous for its Lemon and Paeroa fizzy drink. The road then leads you back through the Karanganake Gorge which is an ideal place to stop and stretch your legs with a walk along the river. Then back to Katikati and a relaxing evening.
